Bang and Olufsen Ear Set 3

I’m going to start writing about the things I buy. Partly because I think I’m good at buying stuff, partly because I want to spend less money and I think this will help me do it - like gamblers who blog about everything they win and loose - it’s a way of making myselft feel guilty about the money I’ve spent.

I’m going to start with something I’ve bought a lot of in the past, headphones. I think I’ve easily spent over £1000 on headphones in my life, but more recently I think I’ve settled on two really good pairs. Two (?!) I hear you ask. Yes, two pairs are essential for any discerning audiophile, one for your stereo and/or computer, and one pair for when you’re on the move. I appreciate that the pair for your stereo are in reality probably better at reproducing sound, but I’ll be damned if I let you walk around outside wearing these. There is also now another reason for having two pairs - because the portable set should include a mic.

Prior to buying Bang and Olufsen’s Ear Set 3 I owned a pair of their earphones. They’re probably the best portable headphones I’ve ever owned, very clear high and mid range and a surprisingly good amount of bass for something so small. I really liked the design too. Some Band and Olufsen stuff can be a little vulgar, but the steel and hard rubber clasp are really pleasing to the eye. Similarly, they’re really comfortable when sitting ing your ears, and given the clasp they are never going to fall out, even if you have big ears like I do!

The problem was when the iPhone replace my iPod I wasn’t making use of the hands free calling that came with the free headphones. I tried using the Griffin Smart Talk, but the excess of wires annoyed me, plus I found the connection pretty loose which meant the sound was prone to crackling. Then came the Ear Set 3.

It was purely by chance that I found them, I was buying my Mum a pair of the earphones for Christmas and noticed them - why does Bang and Olufsen do so little advertising? I headed down the Bang and Olufsen shop in Islington and bought them the same day. Now I’m calling hands free and making use of the voice controls - when nobody is looking that is!

Now for the price. They are a little on the expensive side. The earphones cost £90 so I was expecting a little extra on top. That little extra was another £90 which means I was down £180. Was is worth it? I think so, for all the reasons I noted above, I just better make sure I don’t loose them…
