We Need More Foreign Footballers

I love it when economics and real life collide. This is a great article from Chris Cook in the FT about how more foreign footballers would actually improve the British game, contrary to popular opinion.  You get the gist of the argument from this brilliant paragraph about basketball:

Since height is so important to this sport, there is an extremely limited pool of potential top players. This natural constraint on the labour force has created a sustained and serious competitive balance problem, because the handful of top teams recruit the few good tall players – leading to the conclusion that the basketball league would be a tighter competition if they lowered the hoop.”
